How to Study a Foreign Language Workshop Series

Every August the air is filled with excitement as a new semester begins. The opportunity to start anew is available to everyone! Likewise, we are bringing new resource and opportunities to all language learners at UNC Charlotte. This year, we are very excited to offer a series of free workshops for anyone who is studying a foreign language. The series, How to Study a Foreign Language, is comprised of six workshops designed to help students develop effective study and organizational skills not necessarily taught in language courses. The series is taught by Dr. Bobby Hobgood, Director of the Language Resource Center, and Dr. Adriana Medina, Associate Professor and Coordinator for the Graduate Reading Program in the College of Education. Both Drs. Hobgood and Medina speak several languages each and are themselves language learners.

All workshops take place in the Language Resource Center (COED 434), and are organized as follows:

September 6: Get it Together – What organizational strategies and techniques support successful learning?
(11:00 am – 11:45 am)

September 11: Notetaking and Notemaking – How do I take and make notes?
(11:00 am -11:45 am)

September 19: Studying so it Sticks – What are effective language study strategies?
(3:00 pm – 3:45 pm)

September 28: The Language Learner Within – How do I develop a growth mindset for langauge learning?
(11:00 am – 11:45 am)

October 6: Learning Beyond the Classroom – What language-learning supports are available beyond the classroom?
(11:00 am – 11:45 am)

October 11: Tying it all Together – This workshop is an overview of the series.
(2:00pm – 3:00pm)
